Dad P.I.s & Other Family Values

Gumshoes With Children (Paternal Division)

In a genre where so many protagonists are apparently incapable of reproduction, despite active (or even hyper-active) sex lives, it’s kinda refreshing to see provate eyes who are not only capable of reproduction, but also of parenting. Granted, I can’t imagine Marlowe pushing a pram, or Warshawski running out to Rite-Aid to pick up some Pampers, but some writers have had their P.I.s make the big leap…

  • Stanley Hastings by Parnell Hall
Stanley’s no great shakes as a P.I., but he’s doing okay as a dad to son Tommie–with a lot of help from his wife Alice.
  • Kit Deleeuw by Jon Katz
Part-time P.I. Kit plays Mr. Mom to offspring Ben and Em, while psychiatrist wife Jane brings home the bacon
  • Art Hardin by Robert E. Bailey
The books featuring this family man and detective are marked by author’s quirky, distinctive voice, but the P.I. stuff is never skimped on.
