Jim Brodie

Created by Barry Lancet

Single dad and San Francisco antiques dealer JIM BRODIE is also, rather reluctantly at times, part-owner of Brodie Investigations, the local branch of the Tokyo detective agency his late father founded. But family is family…

As an American born and raised in Japan, Jim’s fluent in Japanese, and since he’s acted as a consultant for the SFPD in the past, they don’t hesitate to ask him for some aid with several puzzling murders in the series debut, Japantown (2013).

He’d rather be tinkering with his beloved antiques, but agrees to help out, not expecting that it will eventually lead him to  a centuries-old international conspiracy that could mean death for everyone he cares about — and an acclaimed series of thrillers that brings him back to Japan frequently and seemingly gets more global in scope with every book, approaching almost Ludlum-like levels of intrigue, but held together by the author’s eye for multicultural details and something as simple and human as the relationship between Brodie and his daughter.

Brodie’s first appearance in a short story, “Three-Star Sushi” (March 2018, Down & Out: The Magazine), was nominated for a 2019 Shamus Award.
